Chiefly, deeds and property papers, 1800-1818, of McCauley of Orange County, N.C.; letters, 1814-1815, to McCauley from his son Major William McCauley, serving with the North Carolina militia during the Creek Indian War in Alabama concerning camp life, health of troops, relations with Creek Indians, and other matters; and two letters, 1819 and 1820, to McCauley from his brother Robert about law studies in Litchfield, Conn. Also included are letters, 1872-1875, received by Dr. John W. McCauley of Pleasant Grove, N.C., from relatives in Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, and New Jersey, concerning business and legal affairs, with occasional comments on society and economic conditions; and a few other items.

Andrew McCauley (died 1832) of Orange County, N.C., was the father of John McCauley (fl. 1819-1820), William McCauley (fl. 1814-1815), and Robert McCauley (fl. 1819-1820). Dr. John W. McCauley (fl. 1872-1875) of Pleasant Grove, Orange County, N.C., was apparently raised by his uncle Gabriel Lea and was involved with the settlement of Lea's estate.
